Sourdough bread’s characteristic tang and chewy texture liven up any sandwich. Our goal is to add the same punch to our holiday dressing.
For many of us, rice pudding evokes comfort as well as indulgence. This version is creamy and nostalgic and takes very little work.
Best served warm with clotted cream and jam.
These are fail-proof oatmeal cookies, chewy and wholesome, with just enough spice and plenty of oatmeal. I like them with dried cranberries and walnuts, but you could add any dried fruit or nut. Try them with dried blueberries and pecans for a change, or currants and chopped almonds, or they're always good with the traditional addition of raisins. This is a terrific lunch box cookie, or great with tea in the afternoon.

Bread and Butter Pudding is classic British mommy food and one of the easiest puddings to make. It's a great way to use up left over bread — white, (the classic), brown, brioche, even stale croissant, the method is the same whichever you use. If you're feeling particularly decadent, smear the buttered bread with a little marmalade or jam before baking.

This big half-moon-shaped turnover is bursting with chunks of apples, raisins and tiny pieces of citron. When you taste what candied citron does for the apple filling, you may want to try some in your next apple pie. High quality candied citron, the kind that comes in big chunks, always makes me think of a lemon that's been dipped in allspice and sugar. Even supermarket citron is good in this tart. Hill farmers make it in the Versilla area of northern Tuscany on January 6, the Epiphany, the Twelfth Day of Christmas, and in Italy, the Day of the Befana when everyone gets presents.
