Steve Jenkins says there are some fine cheeses, at bargain prices, to be found among the uninspiring offerings in the grocer's cheese case. Here are some to look for. All are from France except the Manchego.

  • Comte: the great Gruyère from the Alps is an extraordinary buy at around $7.00 to $8.00 a pound.
  • Fourme d'Ambert and Bleu d'Auvergne from Auvergne
  • Saint-Nectaire from Auvergne
  • Reblochon from Savoie
  • Manchego from Spain
