Wine maverick Joshua Wesson of New York City's Best Cellars says fall is one of the greatest times of the year to match food and wine. At the height of the harvest season he especially loves red wines with an earthy tone. Here are two reds and a white favored by Joshua:

Beaujolais-Villages, Chateau de la Terriere
A "poor man's red Burgundy" showing the concentrated fruit produced by the old Gamay vines on this estate, some of which date from World War I.

Coronas, Torres
Based on Tempranillo, Spain's most important red grape variety, Coronas is richer and more full-bodied than the Beaujolais. It's great paired with grilled meats and stews with wild mushrooms.

Pinot Grigio, Villa del Borgo
Joshua says this estate bottled white from Italy's Friuli region is as good as Pinot Grigio gets! Nearly as rich as Chardonnay, but with less oak, this wine is perfect for fall menus.
