For wine critic Matt Kramer, author of Matt Kramer's New California Wine: Making Sense of Napa Valley, Sonoma, Central Coast, and Beyond (Running Press Book Publishers, 2004), cheap good wine is not an oxymoron. Here are some of his picks to prove it:

  • From Spain: Look for wines from the area called Bierzo and made from the Mencia grape. Matt claims we will be hearing a lot about these wines that resemble Pinot Noir. One example is Petalos, made by renowned Spanish winemaker Alvar Palacios. About $15.99 a bottle.

  • From Italy: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Machiarelli sells for about $6.99 a bottle.

  • From France: Chateau Haut Rian white Bordeaux sells for about $9.99 a bottle.

  • From California: Cycles Gladiator Syrah and Merlot are excellent bargains at about $7.99 a bottle.
