Although it got off to a late start, Washington has become one of the top wine producers in the United States. Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay are among the notable wines produced here, but it's the high-quality Merlots for which the state is particularly well known.
Master of Wine Mary Ewing-Mulligan says look for wines from the following producers for an introduction to Washington state wines:
Major Producers: Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest Winery, Columbia Winery
Smaller Producers: Quilceda Creek Vintners, De Lille Cellars, Andrew Will
