Ben's Chili Bowl, a lunch counter and neighborhood hangout that's been on U Street since 1958, is the home of the 'half smoke.' Unique to D.C., these griddle-cooked sausages are served on a bun and topped with Ben's chili. Lots of celebrities stop by, too, which might be part of the reason Ben's has such an interesting history.
